7-Figure Lesson: Your Goals Should Excite You

by LaTisha Styles  - October 27, 2024

I was recently reminded of an important lesson when a salesperson texted me asking if I’d be hitting 100K/month soon. My first instinct was to defend or explain, but instead, I paused and realized something powerful: that goal felt basic compared to where I’m actually aiming. It reminded me of my own journey, from paying off $22K in credit card debt to building a 7-figure business.

What I’ve learned is that we often set goals that are too small for our true vision. When I made my first six figures, I wasn’t actually aiming for six figures – I was shooting for $300K. The next year, I set my sights on $1.2 million. The key isn’t just setting bigger numbers; it’s about living in the expectation of more and choosing goals that genuinely light you up, regardless of what others think you “should” be aiming for.

7-Figure Lesson: Your goals should excite you, not satisfy others

Let me take you back to my early days when I was drowning in debt. Everyone around me was preaching the same advice: “Focus solely on debt payoff! Put every dollar toward it!” But that approach felt like slavery to me. Why would I want to work just to pay off debt? The breakthrough came when I shifted my focus to a bigger vision – buying my first house.

Suddenly, debt payoff wasn’t the goal; it was just a stepping stone to something that truly excited me. This shift changed everything. Instead of grudgingly making payments, I was joyfully clearing debt because it was moving me toward my real goal. I even celebrated milestones along the way – like buying my first Louis Vuitton bag (used, for $300) after clearing my credit cards. Some might say that was irresponsible, but I knew the importance of enjoying the journey while pursuing bigger dreams.

This same principle has guided my business growth. When others might have suggested setting “realistic” goals like hitting consistent $10K months, I was already envisioning six-figure months. Not because the numbers themselves mattered, but because these bigger goals forced me to think differently, act differently, and expect more from myself.

Take Action: Write down your current goal.

  1. Now ask yourself: “Is this goal actually exciting me, or am I playing it safe?”
  2. Identify what you REALLY want – the goal that makes your heart race a little when you think about it
  3. List three “stepping stone” achievements you’ll celebrate on the way to your bigger goal
  4. Challenge yourself to 10x your current goal. How does that bigger number change your thinking?

Final Thoughts:

I’d love to hear from you: What’s the goal you’ve been afraid to say out loud? What would it look like to 10x your current aspirations?
